Marine Conservation Program

In the Darien Caribbean, our marine work is deeply linked to coastal communities and historical processes such as the conservation of sea turtles in Acandí-Playona.

Since 1993, the Foundation has promoted the Leatherback Turtle Protection Days, a pioneering process that combined monitoring, nest protection, environmental education and community empowerment, and which gave rise to the Leatherback Turtle Festival as a cultural expression of conservation.

This process, sustained over more than two decades, contributed to the declaration of the Acandí and Playona Wildlife Sanctuary and the strengthening of local governance. Today, the communities themselves lead the protection programs, reflecting a conservation model built from the ground up and sustained over time.
